Weekending

the weekend forecast was amazing... sunny with blue skies and warm like summer...
colors were close to peaking and were so vibrant.  i was awed by the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows...
i wanted to soak in every last minute of this gorgeous weekend and my list of things to do was long...
wander downtown to check out artprize, robinettes for apple cider and donuts, go for walks on a trail covered with crunchy fallen leaves, bake something yummy, clean the house with windows and doors flung wide open... the list was long and ambitious...
my expectations were high and as often happens, high expectations are followed by disappointment when things don't shape up the way you expected.
i spent the weekend feeling pretty darn miserable, with a wicked cold and i spent my weekend doing what had to be done but not a thing more and i was disappointed...
i got the boys off to their soccer games and we experienced that bitter taste of defeat
we came home to watch football... U of M vs. Michigan State... huge rivals and again... defeat
laying around, barely moving with the house in shambles all around me... serious defeat

So here i am on Monday and I'm still feeling defeated... i was disappointed with my weekend and it is going to take me days (and i do mean days) to dig myself out from the mess in this house...
this is REAL life... it does not always come packaged in perfect little weekends with bows on top...
but despite that, i really do believe that there is always joy and beauty around us even in the middle of the mess... so today, i am choosing to ignore my disappointment and i am going to dwell on those things that did bring me joy this weekend...

feeling the sun warm my skin and the breeze blow through my hair
the awe of witnessing the brilliant colors of the trees while driving to multiple soccer games...
watching the sun bathe a country field in a warm glow as it set...
laughing with my husband on the car ride home...
the old man at Burger King wearing his crown... it warmed me up inside and made me smile to see him wearing his crown and opening the car door for the gal in his life...
he looked to be about 90.  i couldn't stop smiling... now that is finding joy and embracing it!  What brought you joy this weekend?

  1. Wyatt and Oliver each gave me a silly band. I got a bat and helmet. Then Oliver wanted to trade my a bat for a green hippo. I wanted to keep the hippo. He was cute. I traded. Today he asked if I wanted to trade the green hippo back. Yip.

  2. I also found joy in the warm sunshine last weekend. It is still a muggy 80 degrees here in Iowa but the trees are so beautiful. I got to play soccer in that beautiful sunshine on Saturday and pull out a well deserved win. And, I got to do some homework in the shade of a large orange tree on Sunday, and go for a late night walk with Scotty on a clear night where we could see all the stars and talk about how big God is and how small we are.
